Our history and people

The Tobacco Free Partnership of Tippecanoe County is a collection of devoted people and members of the community.

Our History

In 2001, the Indiana Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Executive Board was created with funds generated by the Master Settlement Agreement between 46 state Attorneys General and the tobacco industry, and by legislation enacted by the Indiana General Assembly and Governor Frank O. Bannon. The Board is responsible for developing programs to prevent and reduce the usage of tobacco and tobacco products in Indiana by utilizing best practices for tobacco control programs developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2002, community-based programs in each of Indiana's counties began receiving money to develop tobacco prevention and cessation programs to address local needs related to tobacco use. Through this community-based funding, the Tobacco Free Partnership began serving the citizens of Tippecanoe County. Our focus was, and continues to be, on a combination of cessation initiatives, public awareness on secondhand smoke, and youth prevention.

In 2005, Purdue University's School of Nursing began serving as the Tobacco Free Partnership's lead agency, providing logistical, administrative, and organizational support.
